Abstract
The most important information carriers for the reconstruction of old metallurgical processes are slags. They are usually found as worthless waste at the place of their creation. They are extremely resistant to weathering. In contrast to ceramics, slags, as they are not guiding fossils in the narrower sense, have been given only minor attention in archaeology, although they are among the most common finds in excavations. Similar to ancient ceramics, slags are a memory of the composition of the precursor’s materials, i.e. ore, intergrown with gangue and host rock, perhaps as a result of the use of fluxes intentionally added to a furnace charge. In addition, all physical parameters of their formation are frozen in them, i.e. firing temperature and duration, redox conditions and the formation of the liquid itself.
