Abstract
The men in this study expressed concern that they might become the “butt” of jokes should partners find their sexual performance lacking. They spoke of a keen awareness that men’s sexual failures serve as comic fodder in mainstream culture. They mentioned both fictional portrayals and experiences with friends and partners that drove this point home. For these men, the pressure to perform well in bed proved salient. They reported a sense of concern that one bad performance may label them forever. At the same time, men believed that their sexual prowess could compensate for other perceived shortcomings.
