Abstract
The overwhelming outpouring of support for the pageant in the local media demonstrated in the first year by two theatrical newspaper reviews, eleven newspaper reports, and four television presentations. Some reports featured the event as a social/historical event. Others reported it as a bone fide theatrical production and reviewed the performance by professional theatre reviewers. The reports commented on the beauty of the Garden Theatre, the creative performance of the players, and the impact of the performance on the audience. The brilliant performances of players deemed to be mad confronted deeply held myths of madness, brought insight, clarified the history of madness, and debunked stigma. This health promotion confirmed a satisfying psychotherapeutic outcome for the players, the audiences, and the wider society.
