Abstract

Nonlinear features of ultrasonic guided waves have attracted significant research interests in the area of damage detection. It has been shown that the nonlinear features of ultrasonic guided wave signals are very sensitive to damage in materials. Recent research has shown that it is one of the promising approaches for damage detection of structures. This study presents a background of the nonlinear features of ultrasonic guided waves and provides an overview of studies and techniques devoted to developments of this technology for damage detection. The chapter also outlines the work carried out by the authors and their associates on the physical understanding, theoretical developments and applications of the nonlinear features of ultrasonic guided waves in damage detection. The studies include combination of analytical, numerical and experimental methods.
