Abstract
I found Kate and one of her sisters in Kampala in 2001, trying their luck cooking for the construction workers building a new road on the outskirts of Kampala. The death of her sister, her failed attempts to succeed in life and in love, and the absence of the fathers of her sons had made Kate more questioning about her own situation than when I first met her. She no longer knew where she was heading. Uganda was changing. A new generation of people with cash, cars and mobile phones was emerging, but Kate was stuck, the highlights of her life being my visits to the country.
