Abstract

In 1950, Swedish Pentecostalism was influenced by American revivals: the New Order of the Latter Rain and the Healing movement. Pethrus sought inspiration and invited evangelists William Branham and William Freeman. This created a controversy in the media, as it challenged the secular-rational direction Sweden was moving in. Pethrus was no friend of charismatic excesses, but he was willing to flirt with fanaticism if the gain was large enough. He moderated the message of the American evangelists, and when a similar revival emerged in Sweden, Pethrus welcomed it despite reservations. When the fervor cooled, he corrected it. The leaders of the revival were ousted, but the Pentecostal movement remained intact. In letters Pethrus argued that US Pentecostal leaders ought to have handled the New Order of the Latter Rain the same way.
