Robotic Hernia Surgery

Abstract

Lateral incisional hernias (LIHs) are relatively rare compared with midline hernias. A number of anatomical factors may cause technical difficulties in the repair of LIH. There is less aponeurotic tissue at the lateral abdominal wall than in the midline portion of the abdomen. Additionally, hernias located close to bony prominences (such as the costal margin and the iliac crest) or close to major neurovascular structures may not allow proper mesh overlap and adequate mesh fixation, depending on the chosen surgical approach.
