Abstract

Because we are dealing with adaptive behaviour, assessment of executive functioning should represent the environment in which the person is functioning. There are a number of so-called ecological measures of executive function which attempt to capture the individual’s behaviour within the context in which he operates. I have included the Functional Executive Scale (FES) which I developed based on real-world behaviours of the students I worked with and used extensively with my clients over the years. The FES consists of two general subscales: metacognition and behavioural/emotional.

This chapter outlines how the FES is used to develop a profile of strengths and weaknesses and from that information, as well as other third-party observations, to develop a particular metacognitive strategy. I have drawn on real cases to demonstrate the process and how I arrived at a particular strategy to address the client’s deficits.
