Abstract
The Place-Train-Remain model which I developed was based on a supported employment model of return to work for clients with a range of disability.
The approach I took with vocational rehabilitation involved the following features: An emphasis on ongoing assessment of workplace functional behaviours using a checklist specifically developed to measure executive function as it related to the workplace. The Workplace Behaviour Assessment is completed by the client and the employer. This information is then used to provide feedback to the client so that necessary adjustments can be made and on-site intervention can be specifically tailored to the client’s needs.
There is evidence that training jobseekers, on-site, to use a Problem-Solving Plan as a compensatory strategy can lead to an increase in their level of independence in the workplace. Problem-Solving Plans represent a metacognitive routine of knowing what it is that you have to do, working out a strategy for doing it, staying focused until you complete the activity and then checking that it works. Jobseekers are coached on the job by an identified mentor or post-placement support staff member to use the Problem-Solving Plans as a form of compensatory strategy.
