Abstract
This chapter introduces the book and sets the tone. It notes that at least fifty per cent of each chapter is written in the first person and that many of the authors struggled with this format—such is the orthodoxy of much of academic publishing. As a prelude to the issues raised in the 30 + chapters in the book, the introductory chapter covers ethics, gender, positionality, and practicalities. It considers some of the main trends in the academy such as the increasingly risk-averse nature of universities and the fact that large swathes of the planet (including China) are increasingly out of bounds for peace and conflict researchers.
