Abstract
Disasters can dismantle the lives of entire populations in unimaginable ways. Minimizing the impact of these disasters, and helping people to recover from their aftermath, are major areas of concern in the global public health field. Increasingly so, largely because of innovations, decreasing cost, and increasing accessibility, is the ability of technology to both mitigate and assist with the response to disasters. Some of the specific methods by which technology can assist in the field of disaster response investigated in this chapter include virtual reality simulations, modeling and simulation of disasters, the use of mobile technology and phones for civilians, social media, early warning systems, mapping, and information dissemination. The next steps necessary to optimize the use of technology in disaster preparedness, as well as a specific case study outlining the workflow in the face of a disaster, are also included.
