Free to Love: Experiences with Love for Women in Prison

Abstract

This chapter describes the relational dynamics of romantic relationships of incarcerated women, in the context of the reflection on the agency of criminalized women. Women’s experiences with love in prison are means of redefinition of one’s identity and one’s decisions in the realm of emotions. Imprisoned women try to maintain their integrity and reverse the negative effects of their deteriorated identity constructed by the different disciplinary agents, where love is a fundamental pillar of resistance, even if it means inserting oneself into a framework of normative gender relations, at least in the first instance. Experiences involving love also constitute a way for the participants to articulate the meaning of prison life and redefine the self. Being in love in contemporary Western society is sociologically understood as a means of self-validation and experiencing freedom, which has a particular symbolic value for incarcerated women, who lack freedom and tend to carry social a stigma derived from penal punishment. Partner relationships thus become a source of positive identity and a way to succeed under conditions of social stratification.
