Abstract

Cleft lip with and without cleft palate and cleft palate in isolation are the most common congenital deformities of the head and neck. In addition to the defects seen of the lip and palate, secondary problems and malformations (e.g., cleft lip nasal deformity, velopharyngeal dysfunction) can result from the underlying anatomical abnormalities seen in this setting. Within this chapter, techniques of addressing primary and secondary sequelae associated with cleft lip and palate are discussed. Additionally, the embryology, etiology, and classification of cleft deformities are reviewed.
