Abstract
We estimate the Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI), headcount ratio, and average deprivation intensity values for a variety of socio-demographic cohorts. More specifically, through an examination of data from the 2008–2018 American Community Surveys, we detail multidimensional poverty incidence and intensity for several categories that identify individuals by gender, age, race, ethnicity, nativity, level of educational attainment, marital status, and labor market status. We first discuss MPI values and variation in related measures both within categories and across cohorts. This is followed by a comparison of the distribution of individuals across four groups: those who are neither multidimensionally poor nor vulnerable to multidimensional poverty, those who are vulnerable to multidimensional poverty, those experiencing moderate multidimensional poverty, and those who are severely multidimensionally poor. We conclude with a review of deprivation frequency values at the dimension and indicator levels of detail.

Notes
- 1.
The other race cohort and the white cohort combine to account for 91.1 percent of Hispanic individuals in our data. The majority of the remaining Hispanic individuals (i.e., 5.1 percent of the remaining 8.9 percent) identify as being of two or more races (i.e., multiple races).

See Chap. 3 for more specifics on the calculation of the deprivation score and its use to identify multidimensional poverty.
- 3.
These specific cohorts are those 18–64 years of age; the race cohorts of American Indians and Alaskan natives, Asians, and individuals who identify as some other race; those who are Hispanic; the foreign-born; individuals who did not complete high school; those who are divorced, separated, or widowed; and the unemployed.
