Heart Rhythm Disorders

Abstract

For most of human history, the heart was the essence of life; yet, it would take centuries before its electrical signals were recorded. In this chapter, the author discusses the recording of the electrocardiogram (ECG), and nearly 60 years later in 1967, the development of programmed electrical stimulation of the heart (PES) by Dr. Dirk Durrer and associates in Holland and, simultaneously, by Dr. Phillipe Coumel and his group in France. In 1969, Dr. Scherlag and Dr. Anthony N. Damato and coworkers described a catheter technique to record a His bundle electrogram at the USPHS hospital in Staten Island, NY. These two pioneering studies would usher a new specialty in cardiovascular medicine that of clinical cardiac electrophysiology. The author also discusses the initial contributions to the field focusing on two schools of thought: The Anthony N. Damato and The Dutch School of Cardiac Electrophysiology, as well as the contributions of several pioneers in clinical and basic electrophysiology.
