Internet of Things: Introduction

Abstract

The most general book section introducing some basic concepts of IoT, including its relation to 5G technology, its specific features, market opportunities and identified threats. Formal definitions are presented (e.g. according to ITU Y.2060) along with a proper nomenclature (that is often misused in current literature by mixing or confusing terms and acronyms as synonymous whereas they represent disparate entities), a reference IoT model, low- and high-lever transmission requirements of IoT systems as well as development forecasts. The section also describes aspects and derivatives associated with IoT, such as the ambient intelligence, edge intelligence, fog computing, capillary networks, and media gateways. The chapter concludes with a presentation of a statistical traffic model for the machine-type communications.
