Abstract
This module introduces to the PROTECT intervention and illustrates pros and cons of the virtual world and the real world. It aims at emphasizing the differences between Internet use disorder and functional Internet usage and explains how Internet use disorder develops as a vicious circle. Specifically, this first module conveys that boredom and motivational problems are risk factors for Internet use disorder which can be modified through various techniques. A case example is introduced which describes a boy who is tired and bored after school and not motivate to do anything else except surfing the Internet. The presented techniques which are applied to modify the vicious circle of boredom and Internet use derive from cognitive behavioral therapy and include cognitive restructuring, self-control techniques, and problem-solving skills. Homework helps the participants to apply the techniques they learned in their everyday lives.
