Abstract
This chapter focuses on four of Purnell & Paget’s Australian employees: bookkeeper Syd D. Campbell; draughtsman Andrew Gordon Wilson; architect John Stevens Gawler; and architectural assistant Robert Claud Gordon Ogilby. It talks about what they did before going to China. Where they lived in Canton. What they did working for Purnell & Paget. What they did in their leisure time, especially writing, travelling and shopping. This chapter also discusses some of the daily problems that they faced over there, including crime and violence, Purnell & Paget’s draconian employment contract, communicating with their Chinese colleagues, and getting along with Arthur Purnell, who was a very prickly customer.
