Understanding and Utilizing Item Characteristic Curves (ICC) to Further Evaluate the Functioning of a Scale

Abstract

Item characteristic curves are often presented in Rasch articles and presentations; however, how should researchers read such curves and look at such curves to better evaluate test or survey items? What is the pattern that researchers want to see from data that are used to determine an ICC? Just as was presented (for the ‘Hills’) in chapter 9 of Rasch Analysis in the Human Sciences, in this chapter of Advances in Rasch Analysis in the Human Sciences we talk readers through the steps required to interpret the patterns that are observed in ICC plots that can be generated as part of a Rasch analysis. For this chapter, links are made to Rasch Analysis in the Human Sciences chapters such as “What is an o-give and how do I use it”.
