Abstract
Stem cells are at the forefront of the development of new therapies for the treatment of orthopedic conditions. The development of these therapies, and the move to the use of regenerative medicine and tissue engineering to address these conditions, may well lead to a substantial change in not only how these conditions are treated but when in the disease process. Stem cell effects are believed to be brought about by two main mechanisms of action, and treatments have been developed to try and exploit both of these. Robust results from research and clinical trials will facilitate the more widespread adoption of these treatments in the health-care sector.
