Abstract
Institutions of higher education increasingly rely on non-permanent and casual staff to support educational programs. While many institutions engage sessional anatomy teachers (SATs) out of a curricular infrastructural need (i.e. increasing student numbers), the SAT workforce may provide unique benefits to the anatomy education experience. These benefits stem from SATs’ vocational experience and/or their close proximity to the learner context and experience. This chapter serves as a practical framework for guiding successful and effective SAT integration into anatomy education programs. This framework addresses the recruitment, selection, training, management and curricular roles which SATs may occupy, as well as practical implementation guidelines (i.e. hiring and interviewing techniques). When implemented, this framework fosters effective SAT curricular engagement yielding benefits to all relevant stakeholders including students, academics, the SATs themselves and the hiring institution.
