Abstract

Modern PET imaging systems are fused with structural imaging modalities such as CT or MRI in order to enable multi-parametric characterization of disease. This chapter covers important design concepts for the new-generation clinical time-of-flight (TOF) PET systems that employ silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) technology, which can be incorporated in both PET/CT and PET/MR systems. First, we discuss the effects of PET system design parameters such as sensitivity and noise-equivalent count rate on clinical considerations, as well as the impact of SiPM-based detectors in this realm. Second, we focus on describing the design and architecture of the SiPM-based detector module used in the Discovery MI PET/CT and SIGNA PET/MR systems. Finally, we present performance characterization data for the Discovery MI PET/CT system, compare its performance to other PET/CT as well as PET/MR systems, and demonstrate its clinical imaging capability side by side with that of a previous-generation clinical PET/CT system.
