Borders, Mobility, Regional Integration and Development

Abstract

Debates on borders, mobility and integration in Africa are ongoing and raise important issues, such as migration, regional integration and development, which were discussed at length in this book volume. Regarding migration, it has had developmental impacts especially in an African context although it presents a paradoxical tendency where African states project negative perceptions of migration. This brings to the fore the issue of the securitisation of borders, which excludes some classes of migrants such as the non-state actors. In this sense, these securitised borders have an impact on migration and by extension regional and continental integration schemes, which are in different phases of formation in Africa. As a result, regional integration schemes should be active in developing regional migration management regimes to enhance human mobility, in readiness for a more or less borderless Africa as immortalised in Agenda 2063.
