Abstract
One person’s trash is another person’s treasure. The same could be said about how each of us perceives road-killed animals. Gleaning White-Tailed Deer delves into the practice of gathering road-kill off the rural back roads and highways of southern Indiana as food. In James Farmer’s detailing of his opportunistic venison harvests, he discusses the history and rise and fall of the white-tailed deer population, as its current abundance lends well to the modern-day gatherer’s list of menu items. Farmer examines how gleaning road-kill fits into food security conversation, within the scope of leisure behavior, and ultimately a connection to the land.
