Abstract
Over the years, linguists have devised several theoretical paradigms to study different aspects of language, each of which has adopted a different approach. Modern linguistics began to develop in the eighteenth century and reached its golden age in the twentieth century, although it is still making progress. Existing theories undergo refinement in the light of new cases, and new theories arise to tackle new issues.
