Abstract

St. Petersburg, Russia, is the home of the historic Mariinsky Theater, an opera and ballet company founded in 1783. During the Soviet era, it was known as the Kirov Theater, and became known around the world with many successful tours, most famously by the ballet company. The historic theater building, with its distinctive pale, pastel green facade, was built in 1860 as an imperial theater, and is registered as a UNESCO World Heritage site as an integral member of the historic St. Petersburg Baroque and Neoclassical ensemble.
