Abstract

Sapporo Concert Hall is commonly referred to by its moniker “Kitara,” a portmanteau of “kita” or north (Sapporo is the largest city on the island of Hokkaido, the northern-most of Japan’s four largest islands), and “kuru” or “welcome” or “please come.” The name is an invitation to come north, as well as a type of ancient Greek lyre, the “kithara.” The hall is the home of the Sapporo Symphony and the Pacific Music Festival.
