Abstract
Research on the design and use of augmented reality (AR) systems in education is in an early stage as developers and researchers examine the affordances and constraints of this promising emerging technology. Despite the relative popularity of history among mobile AR apps, there is a lack of theory-driven empirical research and instructional design. This chapter describes our program of research that contributes to addressing these gaps by examining the ability of a location-aware mobile app and accompanying tour guide protocols to foster historical knowledge, historical reasoning, and emotional engagement. This chapter briefly introduces mobile location-aware apps before describing the theoretical frameworks that informed our instructional design, methodological decisions, and interpretations of findings. Next, we describe the mobile AR app we used in our research from two empirical studies described in this chapter. Our summary of findings draws on two published articles and one new and unpublished paper; the latter examined instances of historical reasoning with the mobile app. We close the chapter with implications for future research, including connections with current and additional research we have carried out with different mobile AR apps: DiscoverUofU and the Edmonton Queer History App.
