Abstract
The chapter construes audiovisual translation and media accessibility as cases of decision-making. First, I talk about some of the frameworks available for analysing decisions in translation. Then, a brief discussion of human judgement at a general level is offered which is then narrowed down gradually to map out different (types of) factors behind translatorial decisions, with a special emphasis on audiovisual contexts. The chapter’s central proposition is that in translation, and all the more in multimodally motivated processes of audiovisual translation and accessibility provision, decisions result from myriad determinants, many of which still remain to be understood, appraised or even identified.

Highlighting the interrelatedness of factors behind decision-making, another aspect is to what extent some of these factors can be adapted in real life. For example, a piece of software can be suboptimal when it comes to its functionalities—which in turn can have negative implications for an individual’s working process and decision-making—but switching to a more optimal variant could be too costly or may be precluded due to other formal or practical reasons.
