Abstract

Appropriate initial care of open fractures is predicated on classification and grading, management of soft tissues, and stabilization of bone. The Gustilo and Anderson classification is the current gold standard of classifying open musculoskeletal injuries. In terms of management, timely antibiotic administration is of vital importance, followed by appropriate debridement, and staging (if necessary) of the bony injury.
