Carotid Artery Disease

Abstract

Carotid body tumors are the most common paraganglioma of the neck. Optimal management is multidisciplinary with various considerations of its biochemical effects, vascular supply, and surgical anatomy. This chapter describes the presentation, work up, and treatment with preoperative embolization and radiosurgery. Special attention is given to the literature on evolving techniques used to minimize the operative morbidity associated with cranial nerve deficit and carotid artery compromise The operative techniques for paragangliomas is addressed in the subsequent chapter.
