Abstract

In order to appreciate the work on physics that was being carried out at USP by the mid-20th century, as well as Jayme Tiomno’s interests and research, both in São Paulo and later on in Princeton, it is helpful to have an overview of the developments that led up to the forefront of physical research in his time in the late 1940s.

For readers who may not be familiar with the history of these topics, we describe in this chapter their development, a natural evolution of the general topic of nuclear physics, beginning in the early 20th century.
