Abstract
The chapter begins by addressing grammar through dominant theories about systems, communicative need, and the relationship between them. This leads to a discussion of the prescriptive/descriptive dichotomy and the implications for TESOL practitioners. Each of the main word classes which might be taught in a TESOL classroom is then examined in terms of function, form, and meaning, and classroom strategies are suggested which focus on these three key concepts. It is acknowledged that grammar often forms a large part of the syllabus but must be kept in balance with other aspects of language teaching and learning.
