Abstract
The aim of this Introduction chapter is to provide the reader with a conceptual background on the topic of conflict and human trafficking and the role of the military. It also ensures the reader is aware of the connection of human trafficking to the broader concepts of human security. Importantly, consideration is given to the role that the military should and could play in the fight against human trafficking. The authors—who are the editors—explain the reason for this book. The chapter also sheds light on the terminology and summarises the work of the collected authors.
We have seen clearly that war acts as a potent catalyst to human trafficking. It breaks down institutional and social protections. And it leaves masses of people vulnerable to traffickers. It is startlingly obvious therefore that greater focus by the international community on preventing conflicts, and stopping their reoccurrence, will have a direct impact on human trafficking.
