Abstract

Breast-conserving surgery (BCS) is the operation of choice for breast cancer, proven to effectively achieve good local control. Currently patients expect the treatment to result not only in long-term local control and survival but also to have good aesthetic outcomes. Good cosmetic results have been proven to affect the patient’s quality of life and psychological outcome. The indications for BCS have broadened, and the procedure is now not only used for early-stage cancer but also for multifocal, locally advanced tumors and those treated by and responsive to neoadjuvant chemotherapy. Oncoplastic breast surgery (OPS) is a surgical technique that combines oncologic with plastic surgery principles. OPS allows broadening of indications for BCS by the application of a technique that is safe oncologically and reduces the risk of late deformities and asymmetry.

This chapter discusses the principles, indication, classification, preoperative planning, safety, surgery techniques, benefits, complications, and follow-up of the OPS breast procedure.
