Abstract

This research explores the multiple levels of contemporary migration narratives within professional athletic competition by focusing on case studies emerging from the Rio de Janeiro 2016 Summer Olympic Games. After years of rigorous training, Olympic athletes must travel the world as temporary migrants journeying to unfamiliar nations by crossing mutliple borders and competiting within temporary communities. They also perform throughout the Games. Kuling considers how the creation of a nation state for refugees at the Rio Games became part of the theatre within the opening ceremonies using performance aesthetics of migration to celebrate the global human spirit.
