Abstract
In recent years, medicine and healthcare has been increasingly embracing the integration of behavioral health providers working in these practice settings. Students and interns seek out fellowships and even careers in concentrated medical areas such as diabetes, opioid use, and oncology. Although several mental health disciplines teach “self of the therapist” curriculum in coursework and curriculum, this training has been largely applied to traditional psychotherapy settings. This chapter will introduce readers to some common topics and areas when entering a medical setting for the first time. Several helpful tips for entering a new setting will also be outlined at the end of the chapter. Additionally, a case vignette will highlight how a new behavioral health provider handled certain challenges with a family in practice that activated specific family of origin areas.
