Abstract

Packaged food can contain ‘non-intentionally added substances’ as a result of the interaction between different ingredients in the packaging materials, from degradation processes and from impurities present in raw materials used for their production. One of the main sources of polymer degradation includes exposure of the polymer to high temperatures and to the ultraviolet–visible light. In the interaction of polyethylene terephthalate bottles with mineral water, several non-intentionally added substances have been identified, such as phthalates, aldehydes (acetaldehyde and formaldehyde) and volatile organic compounds (benzene, toluene, xylene, ethylbenzene, etc.). It is likely that in the majority of cases, due to their very low levels these substances will not be of any health concern.
