Abstract

As is the case worldwide, women are a great minority in the Icelandic film industry. This chapter provides statistical information about women’s contributions to Icelandic filmmaking, and as a response to the texts available at this point in time on Icelandic films and film history, it takes the first step in documenting women’s role in the country’s film history—what could be termed a “herstory” of Icelandic filmmaking. Finally, views and experiences of women filmmakers are explored, as well as efforts made to encourage and support girls and women in filmmaking, both on an institutional level and through grassroots initiatives.
