Abstract
Thyroid dysfunction can markedly increase cardiac morbidity and mortality. Identifying and treating it promptly is critical, though may be challenging, particularly in those with known cardiac disease. Thyrotoxicosis often presents with cardiac manifestations. It is critical to establish its etiology, determine whether it is subclinical, and determine whether treatment can be deferred or is life-threatening, and whether it must be emergently controlled in instances such as when uncontrolled tachyarrhythmia, unstable angina, and thyroid storm are present. Similarly identifying hypothyroidism requires prompt diagnosis and proper categorization in order to determine whether treatment is necessary or can be deferred and whether aggressive management is called for when, for example, profound hyponatremia, ventilator dependence, and myxedema coma are present.
