Abstract

While historically neglected, the right ventricle has become recognized as being an important component of cardiac status. Pathophysiologic impact of various conditions on the right side of the heart can have profound implications on mortality, morbidity, and quality of life. Due to its complex shape, the right ventricle often requires multiple modalities, to view from various planes and angles, in order to assess its size, function, and tissue characterization. This, in turn can provide potential useful information, including prognosis, extent of disease, associated impact on the tricuspid valve and pulmonary circulation, and finally for patient selection and periprocedural planning of invasive treatment options.
