General Situation in Latin America

Abstract

This chapter overviews the general situation in Latin America, including the concept of Latin America, the ideals of integration, and its divisions, both geographic and ethnic. French Guiana is analysed separately, precisely because it is an overseas French territory and partly fits in with the Latin American concept. From these concepts, the development of the region is shown and the stages of integration, through the cooperation and creation of essentially economic blocs between a few countries, even to the union of the entire South America region into one single block fostering development. Finally, the chapter assesses current prospects for regional integration, given the political challenges in the region.
