Abstract
About 75% of global energy supply comes from non-renewable sources such as coal, gas, oil, and nuclear energy. These resources are very limited, and global society has to quest for other sources of energy supply, which is at the current technological development very challenging. Building energy demand for heating and cooling takes up to 40%, which is significant participation. Although challenging, reducing building energy demand is still achievable with new materials and passive design concepts that are a base of the energy storage with PCMs. This chapter introduces the book structure and discusses the importance of the application of phase change materials for passive building design. Latent heat thermal energy storage in passive design has the potential to significantly reduce building energy demand as well as reducing the dependency on conventional energy sources.
