Abstract
The negative impact of poor oral health on the quality of life of older adults has become an increasingly important public health issue, given the relationship between oral health and poor quality of life at older ages, as well as the necessity for good oral health to maintain a healthy diet. The chapter will first review the evidence of the relationship between oral health and morbidity and mortality separately. Then we will examine the association between oral health and health expectancy in two ways. Firstly, as has previously been reported, we will consider oral health as a risk factor, thereby examining health expectancy by oral health status. Secondly, we use oral health status as an outcome and calculate oral health expectancy, that is years lived in different oral health statuses; to date, there are no published papers using this method.
