Abstract
The classical version of the demographic transition theory emerged from attempts in the 1920s to 1940s to classify populations according to the levels of mortality, fertility, and population growth.

Some of Boserup’s and Geertz’s ideas on agricultural development were anticipated in the 1910s and 1920s by Alexander Chayanov, but his works were largely ignored in his country and remained virtually unknown in the West until the mid-1960s.
