Abstract

Beirut Diaries (2006) is set in the aftermath of the assassination of Lebanon’s Prime Minister Rafiq Hariri by a massive car bomb where Beirut became a tent city of protest. The camera follows a young Lebanese woman, Nadine, through a month of days and nights among the tents of tens of thousands of protesters which fill Beirut’s huge Martyrs’ Square under banners proclaiming “Revolution ‘05” and “Truth, Freedom, National Unity”. At first convinced that Hariri’s death has brought the Lebanese together and the old enemies of the civil war are now discussing a shared vision of, “transition from a security state to democracy”, her slow disillusionment is unveiled by the end of the film.
