Open Calcaneus Fractures

Abstract

Open calcaneus fractures represent rare and challenging injuries. Multiple surgeries with significant rates of infection, post-traumatic arthritis, and even amputation can be expected. Injuries with lateral, plantar, and extensive wounds, in addition to Gustilo-Anderson type III wounds, and significant joint comminution are associated with poor outcomes. Many treatment strategies may be employed, and should be tailored specifically to the fracture pattern, but most importantly to the soft tissue envelope. Early and aggressive management of the soft tissues, in consultation with plastic and reconstructive surgery, is indicated.
