A Historical Overview of the Art of Brasília

Abstract

First, this chapter provides a brief art history of the capital to emphasize that Brasília’s twenty-first-century art does not take place in a void, but responds to earlier art from the 1960s onward. Second, it offers historical context relevant to more than one chapter. The chapter is organized chronologically, beginning with the proposal to create Brasília in 1789 and continuing into the 1990s. Primarily, it focuses on art’s influence on the image of Brasília, from Niemeyer’s palaces, to Legião Urbana’s songs, to Behr’s mimeographed chapbooks, and to GOG’s rap.
