Abstract
Substance use/abuse remains a major problem in the world. The use of both legal (alcohol, tobacco, caffeine) and illegal drugs (androgenic anabolic steroids, amphetamines, benzodiazepines, cannabis, cocaine, heroin/opiates, hallucinogens, inhalants, khat, and prescribed/misused drugs) is associated with serious morbidity (health consequences) and mortality. Several chapters in this section discuss epidemiology, pharmacology, and various therapeutic interventions available for clinical management of health consequences of various substance use disorders. It should be noted that even though the treatment of substance use disorders with a wide range of clinical symptoms is complex, effective clinical management is achievable with integrated programs of health care. It is anticipated that the reader at the global level will benefit from the current knowledge on clinical management of health effects of drugs of abuse presented in this section.
