Abstract

Local journalism is immersed in a scenario of structural transformation that questions its future. In this context, it is fundamental to bring innovation derived from social media and big data into the sector. The goal of this chapter is to provide a typology and classification of the new formats linked to social media that can be used by local journalism in news production. Based on an exploratory analysis six broad categories have been identified: storytelling, interactivity, multimedia, image, streaming, and transmedia. Within these six categories twenty-one different formats are located. On the whole, they suppose a broad and varied range of options so that local journalism introduces innovation to fight for its survival in the digital scenario.
